The Proper Perspectives was founded from my personal journey of growing up in a family deeply affected by serious mental illness (SMI). My parents both lived with schizophrenia, and throughout my childhood I witnessed the profound effects that untreated mental illness, poverty, substance use, trauma, and incarceration can have on individuals, families, and entire communities. These experiences shaped my understanding of both the challenges people face and the extraordinary human potential that often remains hidden beneath adversity. They also instilled in me a lifelong commitment to reducing stigma, advancing trauma-informed practices, and helping organizations create environments where people can heal, grow, and thrive.
Looking back, I recognize that unresolved trauma, anxiety, and the pressures of my environment significantly influenced many of my early life decisions. At the time, I lacked both the language and the support systems to understand the impact of trauma on my thinking and behavior. Although I maintained a strong work ethic and gained valuable experience in employment and human resources from an early age, I also became involved in criminal activity that ultimately resulted in a decade of federal incarceration. That season of my life became a turning point rather than an ending.
Following my release in 2022, I committed myself to faith, higher education, professional development, and public service. Through studies at John Jay College and SUNY Empire State University, combined with leadership roles as a Case Manager, Project Manager, Housing Supervisor, Housing Program Director, Recovery Support Coordinator, Community Health Worker Supervisor, Court Navigator Supervisor, Outreach, Advocacy and Policy leader, trainer, and organizational consultant, I have worked to bridge the gap between lived experience and professional excellence. My work has focused on strengthening organizations, developing workforces, improving systems of care, and helping individuals with complex life experiences become successful employees, leaders, and contributors within their communities.
Today, The Proper Perspectives partners with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, universities, and community leaders to develop people, strengthen organizations, and build systems that unlock human potential. Through organizational consulting, leadership development, curriculum design, workforce development, keynote speaking, and trauma-informed training, we help organizations cultivate compassionate workplace cultures, improve organizational effectiveness, and create lasting social and economic impact. My Christian faith continues to shape my commitment to servant leadership and my belief that every person possesses inherent dignity, purpose, and the capacity for transformation when given the opportunity to succeed.

Trauma-informed care principles and practices are essential in human services training, as they help us understand the effects of violence and trauma on individuals and communities. These principles focus on building resilience and fostering healing while utilizing effective communication and engagement strategies. Additionally, self-care and burnout prevention for staff in human services are crucial to maintaining the well-being of those providing mental health support. Implementing trauma-informed approaches within workplaces can be achieved through various strategies, including building credible messengers from individuals impacted by the legal system. This is particularly important for improving access to therapy for those affected by legal challenges and working effectively with individuals impacted by the legal system. Furthermore, adopting best practices when engaging with individuals who have behavioral health concerns such as trauma, serious mental illness, or substance use is vital for providing comprehensive support.
We operate human services training sessions both virtually and in person, focusing on essential aspects such as mental health support and trauma-informed care.
